Els Voorhoeve was trained as a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist in Amsterdam UMC specializing in pre- and postnatal molecular and cytogenetic diagnostics after a career in quality management in different genetic laboratories.

She is currently working at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment as an implementation coordinator for the reference laboratory of the Dutch Neonatal Screening Program. She was responsible for the implementation of a screeningstest for SMA in the Dutch screening laboratories. She is also involved in projects studying the possibilities of next generation sequencing in the neonatal screening.
