Tabatadze

Nazi Tabatadze is a medical doctor based in Tbilisi, Georgia, specializing in rare metabolic genetic disorders. Since 2016, she has been a member of the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM), and in 2018, she became a member of the International Society for Neonatal Screening (ISNS). In 2019, Dr. Tabatadze founded and has since served as the chair of the Georgian Society for Inborn Errors of Metabolism (GSEIM).

Throughout her career, Dr. Tabatadze and her team have played a key role in raising awareness about newborn screening and metabolic genetic disorders in Georgia. In addition to her work at MediClubGeorgia Medical Center as a pediatrician and metabolic specialist, she serves as a metabolic consultant for several hospitals across Tbilisi.

Since 2017, Dr. Tabatadze has been a lecturer in biochemistry at Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU), where she was promoted to Reader/Associate Professor in 2024. In 2020, she developed a module on inherited metabolic disorders for the university’s curriculum and has since served as a tutor and supervisor for students specializing in metabolic disorders.

In 2019, she and her team established an intermediate laboratory to facilitate the sending of samples abroad for metabolic and genetic testing. Her main focus is on improving and expanding newborn screening programs and helping with the early diagnosis and treatment of metabolic conditions.

She also served as the program coordinator for the expanded newborn screening pilot program in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, a political-administrative region of Georgia, where, in 2024, over 2,000 newborns were screened for up to 50 diseases.
